Sarah RubaSinger of New Look
"I really respect a cool rock-chick who is thrashing all around the stage and is spitting and whatever.”
[Ed. Note: Sarah Ruba is the lead singer and synthesizer player in the band New Look, founded by Ruba and her husband, Adam Pavao. Ruba is also a model who as worked for Vogue, Barney’s New York, and Mr. Porter.]
“I’m really inspired by old Hollywood glamour. When I started modeling, I would do shoots that had an old Hollywood vibe and something would just click for me. … Now that I know how to do that look for myself, I feel like I’ve grown up. I feel like more of a woman. Dressing that way has helped a personal transformation for me as well. … It’s a persona, but it’s become a little bit of who I am.
I dress very simple: very formal crisp white shirts, black pants, nice shoes, sometimes I wear big heels. I’m just very done and serious. … I actually spend a lot of time on my hair. I do hot rollers before every show to get that Veronica Lake look. It usually ends up getting totally fucked up by the end of the night, but it looks even cooler then, so it works.
New Look, my band with my husband Adam Pavao, is self-releasing our album on iTunes on June 19th , and we are about to go to Europe for two weeks, so we're having to pack and think about our outfits. I wouldn’t say that Adam and I actively use fashion in New Look, but we have been doing this new thing we call ‘Partner Look’ where we coordinate out outfits on stage.” – Sarah Ruba to Shop Ghost
